Getting Started using iThings:

  1. The first thing you need to do is make sure you have iTunes installed on your computer, because iTunes is the program that syncs your device with pictures, music, pod casts, and apps. How to install iTunes video: http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/#video-install
  2. Simply click on the download button and select run. iTunes will automatically install on your computer. You will be asked to agree to their terms, etc. Just keep clicking "yes" and then "finish" with the installation is complete. (For a step-by-step walk through of how to install iTunes, click here).
  3. You will also need to have an iTunes account with a credit card on file to purchase and install any apps. Many apps are free or very low cost, but even the free apps need to connect to your account before they will download and install on your iThing. The first time you try to add an app, it will ask you to verify the account you are using. You can have more than one iTunes account with multiple credit cards/email addresses if you want to keep your work purchases and your personal purchases separate. Just make sure you remember the username and password information you set up when you establish your account. Since the apps are under your username, they are yours if you ever purchase an Apple iDevice.
  4. Once you have iTunes installed and set up with your account, plug your iThing into the computer using the cable that was in the box with your device. iTunes will ask you to register your device. Registration is easy, so go ahead and fill in the fields requested.
  5. You will also be asked if you want Free Find my iPad. This is a great service that you definitely want to sign up for.
  6. When the software license agreement comes up, click that you agree with it and then click next.
  7. The next box asks you to name your iThing. Since it is a school device, you will need to name it as follows: 562-iPD#-username. For example, mine would be 562-iPD01-. If you have an iPod touch, you would name it 562-iPT#-username. The number of your device is found on a label on the back of your device. Please use 2 characters for the #.
  8. You will also be asked to check whether or not you want to automatically sync your music, pictures, and apps to your device. If you have lots of music or pictures, uncheck that option for now. When you get ready to actually sync your device the next time, you can select which files you want to sync to your device

Setting up Wi-Fi:

  1. Click on the "Settings" app. settings.pngYou will want to connect to wi-fi so you can use your device and download apps. If you are working at school, when you click on the wi-fi button two choices should come up as options: GSD secure and Legacy1.
  2. Click on GSD secure (it is the primary wi-fi connection in our schools now).
  3. It will ask for a username and password. When you touch inside the "username" box, a keyboard will automatically appear.
  4. Type your username just like you would to log on to your computer in the morning. Then touch inside the "password" box. Type your password. If you password contains upper case letters, click on the little up arrow where the shift key would normally be on a computer keyboard. If your password contains numbers, click on the button in the lower left corner of the keyboard that has numbers and symbols on it (.?123). This will open the number and symbol keyboard.
  5. When you have entered your username and password, touch the blue "Join" button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
  6. Click "verify" and then "done" once it has verified the account.
  7. The device will remember your username and password so anytime you are within the range of the GSD secure wireless, you will automatically be connected.
